Travel

Providence is the capital of the State of Rhode Island in the New England region in the Northeast of the United States. It is located about an hour's drive from Boston or Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and about 3 hours from New York City. It is conveniently located and well served by various modes of transportation.

By Air:

International travelers may arrive at Logan Airport in Boston (BOS), or JFK International (JFK) or Newark International (NWK) airports in the New York area. There is frequent air connector service from all three airports to T.F. Green Airport (PVD) in Warwick, Rhode Island. T.F. Green Airport also has a large number of convenient flights from many other airports in the United States.

From T.F. Green Airport: Providence and the Brown campus are 15-20 minutes away by taxicab. The Airport Limousine Shuttle departs T.F. Green Airport hourly (5 a.m. to 11 p.m.) for downtown hotels and the Brown University Campus for $9.00 per person. The Airport Limousine Shuttle office is located in the baggage claim area with the car rental agencies. See www.airporttaxiri.com for more information. Alternatively, the Bonanza Bus lines runs an hourly service from T.F. Green Airport to downtown Providence (Kennedy Plaza) and its terminal located right off Interstate Route 95 (Providence). All the downtown Providence hotels are within a short walking distance of Kennedy Plaza, and the Brown campus is a short taxicab ride away from either Kennedy Plaza or the Providence Bonanza terminal.

From Logan Airport: The most efficient means of getting to Providence from Logan International Airport is via Bonanza Bus Lines which departs on an hourly schedule from outside the International Terminal E, as well as other terminals. For schedules and fares see www.bonanzabus.com.

By Rail:

Amtrak northeast corridor service provides rail transportation from Boston, New York, and Philadelphia right to downtown Providence's new train station. For schedules and fares see www.amtrak.com.

By Automobile:

Route 95, the major interstate highway that runs down the entire east coast of the United States from Maine to Florida, goes right through downtown Providence. Below are some driving directions to the Gregorian Quadrangle on the Brown University campus:

From the north/Boston:

o Take I-95 south to Exit 20, (I-195: Cape Cod, East Providence).
o Once on I-195, take Exit 2.
o At the bottom of the ramp, turn left onto Wickenden Street.
o At the second light, turn left onto Brook Street.
o At the first stop sign, turn left onto Power Street.
o At the first stop sign, turn right onto Thayer Street. The Gregorian Quadrangle is to your right along the entire block.
o Look for cast-iron gates on the right, just before the corner of Thayer and Charlesfield Streets.
o Once through the gates, enter the doors on your left.

From the south/New York or the Providence T.F. Green Airport:

Housing & Accommodations

Carbon 2004 will be held on the campus of Brown University located in the historic "East Side" of Providence, Rhode Island. A few different types of accommodations are available, from "up-scale" hotels to air-conditioned dormitory rooms at the Gregorian Quadrangle on the Brown University campus. Transportation to and from the Brown University campus from downtown hotels will be provided twice a day during specified hours in the morning and late afternoon from locations at or near the three Conference Hotels. The dormitory rooms at the Gregorian Quadrangle are within 5 minutes walking distance from all the Conference venues.

Gregorian Quadrangle - Dormitory Rooms

Within 5 minutes walking distance of the principal Conference venues, the Gregorian Quadrangle has 300 air conditioned, single dormitory rooms in suites of three, four, five and six bedrooms per suite. Each suite has a common living area, with single bedrooms located off a connecting corridor within the suite. Semi-private bathrooms are located outside the suites.

Conference Hotel

Room blocks have been reserved at the following three hotels. Contact the hotel directly in order to make a reservation. Be sure to request the rate for the American Carbon Society in order to receive the group rate. The cut-off date for holding the room blocks is June 10, 2004.

The Providence Biltmore

"The Grand Dame of Providence" the Providence Biltmore Hotel is the epitome of charm and elegance. Located in the center of the Capital City, the hotel is in close proximity to all that the city has to offer. Shuttle service will be provided morning and late afternoon from the front door of the Biltmore to the Brown campus. Continental breakfast is available at Starbucks, located in the Biltmore.
